The ICJ Reports are organised by year, so they take square brackets. The older PCIJ series is organised by number, so it takes round ones.

r 10.2.1(b) cuts the case name down: drop a leading “The”, and drop “Case” or “Case Concerning”. The uncut version is printed in the guide as an example of what not to write.

Name (Parties) (Phase) [year] ICJ Rep page at [paragraph].

Give the parties, the phase, the tribunal, the chamber, the case number and the date.

Where an arbitration has a case name, the parties go in brackets after it. Where it has none, the parties become the name and are not bracketed (r 10.3.1(b)).

Never write “Case no” before an arbitral case number (r 10.3.2).

The case number comes first, with no comma before the name (r 10.5.1(b)(i)). The volume of the European Court Reports attaches to the page, not to the series.

The Reports went digital only in 2012, so there are two forms split at that date. Since then a case carries an ECLI number instead of a volume and page.

r 10.5 opens by pointing out that the European Union courts and the European Court of Human Rights belong to different institutions under different bodies. They never share a citation form.

Trade panel and Appellate Body reports are cited by title, document number and date, with a description of what the document is in brackets at the end.
